Same thing, different season

11 09 2010

So…again this season we don’t have an undefeated team going into Week 4.

Deboccery, with its re-tooled line-up were the last to fall – and to the previously winless (but again stylishly shod) Meatballs.  Deboccery went 1-1 for the night, but that wasn’t enough to keep the wine-swillers of the bocce pitch from dropping into second place behind the License to Roll, whose Bond-like precision led them to two victories and a 4-point differential to top the league standings.  By the way, the Meatballs went 2-1 for the evening, pulling them from the cellar to 12th place in the standings, not bad for a team that had to forfeit a couple of games in Week 1.

The overall standings for the league after Week 3 are:

Wins Losses Pct. PF PA Diff
1 License to Roll 5 1 0.833 105 72 33
2 Deboccery 5 1 0.833 100 71 29
3 Bocce Bartokomous 3 1 0.750 55 46 9
4 What Up, Biocce? 4 2 0.667 95 75 20
5 Segals 2 1 0.667 48 39 9
6 Team Schweddy 2 1 0.667 42 34 8
7 Sons of a Bocce 3 2 0.600 64 53 11
8 Ball Bustahs 3 2 0.600 72 63 9
9 Tonsil Bocce 4 4 0.500 99 92 7
10 Cojones Loco 2 3 0.400 63 80 -17
11 Bevo Bowlers 2 4 0.333 79 93 -14
12 Meatballs 2 5 0.286 55 91 -36
13 Swim, Bike, Bocce 1 3 0.250 50 54 -4
14 Bocce Said She Was 18 1 3 0.250 39 53 -14
15 Revenge of WAH 1 4 0.200 55 71 -16
16 Mumbling Skulls 1 4 0.200 47 81 -34

Other highlights from this past week of play:

  •  Tonsil Bocce finally made their transition from the gravel to the grit, winning not only their first non-forfeited game of the season but two more, to boot…a major reversal from their three losses the week before.  One of their wins came against Sons of a Bocce in a wild, spirited hipster bocce-nal (which kept the SOBs from taking over 3rd place in the standings).
  • What Up, Biocce? has regained their form which took them to the championship game last fall, averaging 20 points in their two solid wins on the night.
  • Despite going 1-2 on the evening, Cojones Loco have to be happy with their solid performance in a 2-point loss to Deboccery.   At 2-3 and in 10th place, they are well-placed to make a run for the play-offs this year.  Not bad for a team that finished with 2 wins and in next-to-last place in the spring.
  • A no-win night for four of the teams leaves them at the bottom of the standings:
    • After blowing an early lead to Ball Bustahs, Bocce Said She Was 18 found out that the shitty Off-Ramp court both giveth and taketh away;  perhaps it was the bad karma that Capo Sham put out in to the universe when smack-talking about a certain Commissioner’s wife.
    • Revenge of WAH dropped two, including one to the Meatballs, meaning they’ll likely need to go at least 6-2 the rest of the season to make their first play-off appearance.
    • And still trying to shake off last year’s defeat in the championships, Mumbling Skulls lost all three of their games this past week, one possibly swayed by distracted referees according to reports from some on the sidelines.  At 1-4, play-off repeat will depend on the Skulls finding their form and scoring the more than 9.4 points per game they’ve rolled thus far this season.
  • Unable to find their rhythm  (or a win) against the hot-rolling What Up, Biocce? and Tonsil Bocce squads, Bevo Bowlers‘ two losses left them with a slightly more rosy play-off picture at 2-4.

Nuthin' but hi-jinx: Commisioner P. & Michael @ the madcap Tonsil Bocce / Sons of a Bocce roll-fest.
