Bocce is Life!

24 08 2010

This piece from “The Loop” on cox-sports.com was shot on the night of the league BBQ and Block Party in June…when the Ball Bustahs won the 2010 Spring Nocabulabet Bocce League championship in three tough games against Mumbling Skulls.

What a beautiful evening it was…definite proof that bocce IS life.

League members dodged the raindrops on Opening Night of the Fall 2010 season (August 25), resulting in the following outcome:

Wins Losses Pct. PF PA Diff
1 Deboccery 2 0 1.000 42 25 17
2 License to Roll 1 0 1.000 21 14 7
3 Segals 1 0 1.000 18 11 7
4 Sons of Bocce 1 0 1.000 12 6 6
5 Bocce Said She Was 18 1 0 1.000 11 10 1
6 Bevo Bowlers 1 1 0.500 27 21 6
7 Tonsil Bocce 1 1 0.500 20 16 4
8 Ball Bustahs 1 1 0.500 31 29 2
9 Swim, Bike, Bocce 1 1 0.500 26 24 2
10 Cojones Loco 1 1 0.500 27 34 -7
11 Mumbling Skulls 1 1 0.500 22 31 -9
12 Team Schweddy 0 1 0.000 10 11 -1
13 Bocce Bartokomous 0 1 0.000 14 16 -2
14 Revenge of WAH 0 1 0.000 6 12 -6
15 What Up, Biocce? 0 1 0.000 14 21 -7
16 Meatballs 0 2 0.000 0 20 -20

Who’s the hottest of the five teams which remain undefeated after Week 1?

  • As the only team who won two games the first week, Deboccery has made a strong case, especially with their 13-point win over last year’s championship runners-up Mumbling Skulls.
  • The Segals had only two returning teammates on the court for Opening Night, but the veterans and the newbies look to be in mid-season form as they easily defeated the Spring 2010 champion Ball Bustahs.
  • Bocce Said She Was 18 stormed out to an 11-0 lead against the always-formidable Team Schweddy (who were proudly sporting their “Schweddy Balls” uniforms)…but were lucky to hold on for an 11-10 win.
  • Sons of Bocce (formerly Just Jacksons) double-upped Revenge of WAH 12-6 in a controversy-laden match which will certainly be motivating the newly formed corps of commissioners to get the rules revisions and the handy-dandy “10 Things Every Referee Needs to Know” cheat-sheat out ASAP.
  • Newly minted License to Roll (a Mumbling Skulls spin-off) won their only match…but they may not have been all that hot, as they might have depended a little too much on the fourth player (picked up through the new forfeit-prevention rules package) for their victory over What Up, Biocce?  The Rollers along with former WAHsters Bevo Bowlers and the third new team Tonsil Bocce finished a combined 3-2 for the first week.  However, two of those wins came via forfeit by The Meatballs, whose troubles with planes, trains, automobiles, and ad-agency deadlines kept them from the courts this week.  Hope they are able to return (and bounce back) next week.

Nocabulabet Bocce League

My favorite part of the piece is 1:30 in when Feeser nonchalantly deposits his 12-pack of ‘Gansett into the cooler. Ni-i-c-c-ce!!
