NBL hits the midway point in Season #5

29 05 2010

With 16 teams in this spring’s league (the largest complement yet), we’ve passed the midway point with teams having played more than half their games.  And the playoff picture is far from clear: 13 teams are within a game or two of placing in the top 8…and all but one are still mathematically alive in the hunt.

The current standings are:

NOCABULABET BOCCE LEAGUE — Spring 2010 Standings

Some interesting points regarding the season:

  • There hasn’t been an undefeated team since all had registered at least one loss by Week 2, the earliest in NBL history.
  • The Segals, bringing on some new blood, are back to the top of the standings, redeeming themselves after a woeful showing in the Fall 2009 league to follow up their back-to-back league championships in Fall ’08 + Spring ’09.
  • The three new teams this season (Bocce Bartokomous, Bocce Said She Was 18, and Cojones Loco) are all still alive in the playoff hunt, but #8 is the highest any of them are in the current standings.  Bocce Bartokomous entered Week 3 as the #1 team in the league…but they dropped to 8th after two losses that week (one of them a league record 21-0 loss to Bocce Said / 18).  Let’s see if these newcomers can recapture the form that brought them the Fall 2009 one-day tournamnent championship.  Remember, folks, this is a marathon, not just a sprint.
  • The biggest surprise of the season: 3 Guys, 4 Balls‘ 0-6 start!  Yes, they dropped their first four due to forfeit…but their two one-point losses in Week 4 were shocking, especially given more than one league member was expecting to still see them in the playoffs even after spotting the league four games.  Let’s see if the return of Dr. John next week will be the spark they need to win their last four games…and pray that a 5-6 record will somehow be enough to make it into the playoffs.
  • Another mild surprise…That’s How We Roll tied for third (despite a -6 point differential) with defending champs Team Schweddy and the perennial fast-starters (and late-season folders), Mumbling Skulls.  Not that the ‘Rollers aren’t always competitive…they are jusst holding firmer than they have the past couple of seasons…and Capo Angela is sassier than ever…and we like it.  Destined for the playoffs this year?  Could be, given that 3 of their last 5 games are against teams in the bottom half of the standings; they also play Deboccery, the team from which they spun off after the inaugural Spring ’08 season.

For league members, fans, family, and friends, alike…remember that the traditional end-of-season BBQ and Block Party is scheduled for Wednesday, June 30th.  Party starts at 6:30 p.m., bocce starts at 7:30 p.m. at Nocabulabet Park at the corner of Spruce and Dean streets, one block north of Atwells Avenue on historic Federal Hill in Providence.
